The North American fur trade is one of the world\u2019s great stories. \u00a0For Canada it was crucial,\u00a0forming for a long time\u00a0the basis of our economy and\u00a0ultimately creating the very\u00a0borders of our country.\u00a0And for\u00a0our\u00a0native peoples\u00a0it was\u00a0even more so. \u00a0It was their trade. \u00a0They\u00a0were the ones that went out and got the furs and\u00a0then\u00a0bought the goods\u00a0that were traded\u00a0for them. \u00a0For many of them, for over 200 years,\u00a0it was the only contact with whites that they had, and it prepared them for what was to come as the\u00a0settler\u00a0population moved further west. \u00a0As one Chief said. \u00a0These were the ties that bind.<\/span>\u2014From Montreal\u2019s fur brigades with French Canadian voyageurs paddling their heavily laden freight canoes 3,000 miles across the continent, to the Scotsmen of the famous Hudson Bay\u2019s Company, the world\u2019s oldest incorporated enterprise, this 45 minute presentation captures the romance and extraordinary achievement of this early period of Canadian history.<\/p>\n
